About A4 Sizing

The origin of the Ax paper sizing system dates all the way back to 1786 when a German scientist theorized the remarkable utility of this system based around the square root of two.  Many publications during the French Revolutionary period used the Ax aspect ratio but for whatever reason fell out of favor in later years.

The modern A4 system was developed in the early 1900’s by Dr. Walter Porstmann.  The main advantage of this system is that it’s very easy to scale.  If you divide a sheet of Apaper into two equal halves the halves maintain their aspect ratio of √2:1.  The practical outcome of this mathematical theory is that documents are more easily able to be enlarged and shrunk via photocopier without waste.

The net result is the popular A4-size paper which is 210 × 297 mm (8.3 × 11.7 in), 6 mm narrower and 18 mm longer than traditional North American “Letter” size paper.
